"What is real museum experience?"

On the home page of Google, I found the instruction of "Google Art Project". It immediately reminded me of this virtual museum which was introduced on my favourite podcast, TED. The presentation was by the project leader, Amit Sood who explained how they completed this project. It made me wonder what real museums or art galleries experience is. As I am a bit fundamentalistic about real experience about museums, so I'm always skeptical about this virtual thing. Even I see the images of art works with extremely high resolution thanks to the high-tech (it seemed to be one of the height lights of this programme.), the experience on PC screen does not give us scent, sound, or atmosphere of exhibition rooms. So it seems just copying the smooth surface of the works. However, the personal story of Sood, that he grew up in India and had little chance to visit museums were a part of motivation to proceed the project gave me something positive. At the end of his presentation, he articulated the real museum experience is important even though he was there to show this new invention of museum experience. When I heard his words, I thought I should see what it is.

Opening the Art Project website, You could see closed-up picture of famous art works that Sood explained enthusiastically. It is part of Van Gogh's oil painting, which the three dimensional brush strokes are clearly visible. Where you can "explore" are world famous seventeen museums and art galleries such as MoMA, Tate Britain, Hermitage, so on. I tried to see Tate Britain where I have been to several times. By moving the icon, you can change your views forward to back, up to down, or right to left to "walk" through the exhibition rooms. When you would like to see the work, you could use magnifier icon as if you would see it with a magnifier. I felt something wrong with the height of the eye level. It seems a bit higher. This "exploring" was almost what I had expected. It tries to be close to the real experience and also add something that you could not experience in real museums. It must be meaningful for those who has little chance to visit real museums and art galleries. However, I felt it is not enough closing up to the details, and it is not the only way to deepen the experience. Exploring this website, I felt it was too pushy for users, and this exhausted me to follow the creators' intension (it is conscious, or not.) as I want to act more freely in this virtual exhibition floor. It was like they believe the technology too optimistically. I always have a conflict in my mind that how I should understand such situation. It is very important statement of Sood at the end of his presentation that this project does not replace the real museum experience, but only the complement. It could be said that we are living in the age that we need to judge to take appropriate balance between real experience and virtual experience by ourselves.
In the Art Project website, you can see the video of making process of the project on the Visitor's Guide. Here, it cleared the question of the height of eye level.

(English follows after Japanese)

「I wish for you to stand up for what you care about by participating in a global art project, and together we'll turn the world...

From TED again. In this programme, a French graffiti artist called JR who won the TED Prize talked in the title with "Could art change the world?" to present his works and projects. He had been drawing his names and patterns with spray from the roofs of Paris from when he was in his teen. Then he made "sidewalk galley" to put the photos of him and his friends on the wall of the buildings in the city of Paris. He set many blown-up photos as large as a wall of the building. They have an enormous impact. However, I wondered it was regal or not as it looked so brave!

Then he headed to the Middle east from the question, what is the difference between Palestinians and Israelis. He took photos of Palestinians and Israelis of the same job like taxi drivers, lawyers, or cooks. He made gigantic portraits and hoisted them on the wall both Palestinians and Israelis by side. The project name was "Face to Face". People around him worried and warned him that people might kill, kidnap him, or some terrible things might happen, thought, he never be shaken. He instead had been into the people. He has gotten help from both Palestinians and Israelis he displayed the blown-up photos on the walls in towns both in Palestine and Israel. A Palestinian helped to glued the Israeli's photo, and vise versa. JR once asked them "Do you know who is who (who is a Palestine or an israeli?)?" He said there has been silencing. Here, the applause came from the audience. In the end, we can not tell who is who from the faces even they have conflicts in politics or religion or something else.

He has put the idea to Africa, India, Cambodia, Brazil. He regularly returns to the sites, and sees that they are transforming in many ways like women are independently making the free catalogue, or someone stole and taken them. I thought they were fascinating events. The projects have changed, spread and filtered in the sites in the process of creating even in the place where people were not familiar with contemporary art style.

In the last, he said, "I wish for you to stand up for what you care about by participating in a global art project, and together we'll turn the world... INSIDE OUT". There was standing ovation in the audience. I, also in my mind, tried to be standing up to make applause, but there was alerting in my head and sit back again. There is one question, could art undoubtedly change the world? His projects are so strong to attract so many people's attention and change the point of thinking of the world, but for me, I think art should be more personal and intimate. In my view, the impact of art is so personal, and there is the effective time, for each of them to experience it. So I do not think it is wrong that there would be people who never receive the influence of art. The following is "global". It is so hard word. People might say that it is prejudice, but I think this message has forced power to draw someone into the majority, even they want to do by themselves as they want. I could not believe that art is incompatible with "global" things. These projects by JR gave me some impacts to think about the meanings of art often entirely. I do appreciate his viewpoints, mobility, and ability to connect people to his world. However, I still think art is not a way to change the world. I feel like he gave me another task that takes lots of time.

Read my pins 再び

(English follows after Japanese)

Museum of Arts and Designで見た『Read my pins』 という展覧会についての記事を覚えておられるでしょうか?(2010/1/2 「NY探訪記 その1 Museum of Arts and Design」をご覧下さい。)

"read my pins" again

Do you remember the article of the exhibition of "read my pins" in NY Museum of Arts and Design in Christmas holiday in 2009? (sorry that article is in only in Japanese now! ) It was about the collection of the pin of ex-Secretary of State of the US, Madelaine Albright. This exhibition is still touring across the US!

I have known this in the programme of TEDWoman. She was a guest of this session. She was wearing a pin as always which is layered fragments of stained glasses. The interviewer asked what the meaning of that, she replied, "This is breaking the glass ceiling. The audience was so excited. TEDWoman's subjects were especially women who are active in the world, so there's no doubt, there are lots of women who look so energetic in many ways. The title, When she mentioned the exhibition title, "Read my pins", these women bursted into laughter.

In the conversation, she talked about how she started to wear pins in the occasions of diplomacy. It was after the Gulf war ended when she was appointed as an ambassador of the UN. Then Saddam Hussain invaded the neighboring countries, many papers described Albright in many ways, and one of them was "unparalleled serpent". So she got the pin of the unparalleled serpent and attended the meeting about Iraq. On the press conference after the meeting, someone asked why she wore that pin. So she answered "Because Saddam Hussein compared me to an unparalleled serpent".

After this story, she mentioned her working life in the international politics, which is still men's world. Her words must have been so inspiring for those who listening to the session who are struggling with the "glass ceilings". From her story, it sounds so compelling that what women wear becomes the excessive focus of attention. When she was appointed the UN ambassador, someone told her "Go out and look like a diplomat.", then she thought there would have been many opportunity of shopping. Ii impressed me that how positive she behaved even in that pressuring appointment. Well, if you are not confident enough like her, you never could fulfill the mission of that job. Even though she wondered how short length of the skirt should be, should she wear a hat? The time is passing, and the world seems to be more tolerant, the public eyes are not so kind to women. Albright introduced the story that when the former Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice wore boots in an event, some criticised her. It seems rather unfair the men wont' be blamed like that. (In my opinion, it is blessing they enjoy the benefit of the uniform called a "suite".) Fashion is one of the way to express oneself. Sometimes it could express the position in the society they are belonged. However, the criteria are extremely vague. We often say "a mother should not wear like that" or "He/she is incredible to wear that bright outfit even he/she is not young.". In such society, Albright would have had a strong will power and had coped with the difficult situations in the battle fields of international politics with her pin as a weapon, which is one of the symbols of female fashion items.

Blink -「

The Power of thinking Without Thinking"(「考えている自覚のない考えの持つ力について」かなり意訳ですが。)

Creative cocooning?

It is a little bit personal story. The other day, I suddenly came across in my mind the ballet work choreographed by Maurice Bejart, "Bolero". I have searched it on YouTube and found one that Jorge Donn danced the solo part. That was what I had seen when I was a high school student. I do remember how I felt that moment, so impressed, and literally, I kept my eyes on it. The solo dancer who looks so superior to anyone else, and others around him were like mysterious pagan dancers. It was totally different from classic ballet I know that have story and they divide male character and female character clearly. The energy of body seemed to be so naked, and it gave me shock. I, who was in teenage, was not able to find words to describe what it is that human movement create such a powerful atmosphere. At the same time, I was impressed that the shock I experienced has not changed even now.

To recall my teenage days, what I have encountered then such as modern dancers like Saburo Teshigawara, or Sankaijuku, painters, for example, Egon Schiele and Georgia O'Keeffe, or sculptors like Isamu Noguchi or Constantin Brancusi are still the basis of my sense of value of art. To be honest, when I was a high school student, I'm more reluctant to go out with friends (of course I attended class everyday!) than cocooning in my own world of art that makes me excited. I often thought "the world could express in many ways by seeing the world as we like through art, how many art works are there that show me different aspect of the world?". To be more honest, I was not happy at being with classmates, and it was after entering university when I started enjoy meeting and chatting with friends. For me, I have thought it was my negative side of teenage days or could be said "dark history in my life". It was not at all. I finally realised it was not when I saw the video of Bolero again and again on YouTube. I was creating the intimate connection with the world through the arts in my own ways at that time. In these several years, both at work and personal life, I have been feeling like stuck because there did not seem to have the answer for the big question, "What is the meaning, what is the value of art in society?". Now I found a small piece of answer it is in myself. Although it is personal anecdote, it is truly happy discovery for me.
