今日は大人向けの話題です。ALLMEDIANYという情報サイトの記事で、NYにあるMuseum of Sexの企画展のオープニングが紹介されていました。この博物館については、以前NYに旅行した友人からパンフレットをもらって知っていました。秘宝館のようなものなのか？と思っていたのですが、本気の博物館でした。博物館のサイトを見ると、トップページに"History, Evaluation & Cultural Significance of Human Sexuality（人間のセクシュアリティの歴史、評価、文化的重要性）についての博物館と紹介されています。日本の春画なども含めて15,000点のコレクションやアーカイブがあり、研究機関としても充実しています。ミュージアムショップ（あんなものやこんなものを通信販売で買うことができます。）やバーもあります。詳しくは書いてありませんでしたが、入場できるのは18歳以上のようです。
企画展は"F*CK ART"と"Universe of Desire"というタイトルで、性にまつわるアート作品が集められています。オープニングではnear-naked（「ほとんど裸」というのはど程度のものか気になります。）なウェイターが登場したり、趣向が凝らされた過激なフードが提供されたりしたそうで楽しげです。その雰囲気は「大人向けのびっくりハウスのよう」と表現されていました。
この記事を読んで、4年前に書いたバービカンアートギャラリーの"Seduced: art and sex from antiquity and now"という企画展を思い出しました。この企画展は、過去から現代の美術品における性描写の歴史を追ったもので、こちらも来館者を18歳以上に限定していました。一方"F*CK ART"は現代作品が主なようです。記事や博物館のサイトでもいくつか作品を見ることが出来ます。実際に訪れてはいませんが、そこからは避け難い欲望の奥深さや、哀しみのようなものが伝わってきます。悪趣味と紙一重とも言えますが、見る人の価値観やセンスを問われる主題かと思います。「オープンな気持ちを持っていて、アートについてよく知っていて、セクシュアリティに興味のある人に見に行ってもらいたい。」と記事は締めくくられていました。
日本でこのような博物館はまだ見たことがありません。議論の余地はありますが、あまねく広くではなく、限定した来館者のための展覧会というのも私は賛成です。美術館や映画のアーカイブ、自然史博物館などでMuseum of Sexのような企画の実現が可能なのではないでしょうか。そのオープニングレセプションがこの展覧会のようなら、私も是非招かれてみたいです。
Sexuality, art and etc.
Today's story is for adults. In the article, in an internet media ALLMEDIADIARY, they introduced the special exhibition in Museum of Sex in NY. I have known this museum from the brouchere one of my friends brought form NY. I guessed it makes jokes about sex; nevertheless, from the article and the website of the museum, it is a "genuine" museum. In the top page of the museum, it tells "History, Evaluation & Cultural Significance of Human Sexuality". Including some Japanese Shunga, there are about 15,000 items of collection, and they also have an archive. They work as a research foundation. There is a museum shop (You can buy some filthy items by email order.) and bar. They do not articulate, but it seems the admission allows over 18 year old.
The special exhibition of which title is F*CK ART". They pile up a variety of works related to sex and sexuality. In the opening reception, there were "near-naked" waiters serving, and there were sensational food, too. The writer described it as "Funhouse for adult".
When reading this story, it came across the exhibition that I have introduced before, "Seduced: art and sex from antiquity and now" in Barbican gallery, in London. This exhibition traced the history of expression in sex and sexuality. This also limited the visitors over 18. On the other hand, "F*CK ART" seems to be only contemporary works of art. You can see of the works form the page of the article and museum's website. I have not visited this exhibition, in fact, you could see seductive drive, and pathetic feeling though them. Some might think it is bad sense; however, it questions your sense of value and humour. The writer closed the article saying "I highly recommend it for the open minded, art savvy, and those with a general interest in sexuality (not just having sex).".
I have not found a museum of this topic in Japan yet. I bet it is because controversial issue. I personally agree with these exhibitions that are not widely welcome, limit visitors. The exhibition like Museum of Sex could be feasible in art galleries, film archives, or natural history museums. If the opening reception is like this, I would do like receive invitation card.
